In a busy, crowded Walmart parking lot, people don't always stop to make themselves aware of their surroundings. Richmond Police say that's probably one reason why a man was able to casually walk through the lot on Tuesday breaking into multiple cars without anyone noticing.
But what the suspect may not have noticed were all the cameras watching him.
Investigators say the man spent a couple of hours late afternoon in broad daylight covering virtually the entire lot. In plain sight of shoppers walking to and from their vehicles, the man appears to hunt for easy targets.
The surveillance video shows the importance of locking all your doors because in some cases, the suspect appears to open the driver side door to unlock the passenger side, then walks around the outside of the vehicle, opens the passenger door, and gets inside.
In one case the thief got away with little more than CDs and cigarettes, but since posting photos on their Facebook page, Richmond Police have already begun hearing from others who only now realize they're victims. Investigators say the thief hit at least five vehicles, all left unlocked in the parking lot.
Thanks to the video, police hope the public can help track down the suspect and do more to protect themselves in the future.
Investigators are looking into possible connections to similar car burglaries throughout the area.
