Thieves tear their way in West Liberty business

Updated: Fri 11:46 PM, Feb 08, 2013

WEST LIBERTY, Ky (WKYT) - Police in West Liberty say between Wednesday night and Thursday morning someone tore their way into the Family Dollar in the IGA Plaza.

"They used a prybar to pry away the siding, kicked the interior wall trough to a storage area. From there they had access to the whole store," said West Liberty police chief Kelse Hensley.

The thief, or thieves, then grabbed at least $10,000 worth of cash and merchandise. The chief says not only did they steal laundry detergent and baby wipes, but they also took the store's safe. They then they covered their tracks.

"They used a piece of cardboard to hide the entry hole that they made so you could drive by and not tell that it was damaged," Kelsey said.

That same night cars at two different nearby businesses were broken into. Hensley believes it was probably the same people.

"We're so small that it's unlikely that you're going to have two different sets of thieves running around that small an area in a single night," he said.

The chief says if they are going to make a break in this case it will most likely come from a witness. He's hoping someone saw the thief in the area, or that someone sees some of those stolen items in the coming days.
