LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - The 140th Kentucky Derby kicked off with a beautiful day as thousand of people got ready for a day at the races.

Crowds packed into Churchill Downs in their hats, heels and bow ties ready to enjoy an annual tradition in the Commonwealth.

A Louisville resident and regular Derby attendee explains, "I think it's on everyone's bucket list. It's a nationally recognized event that a lot of celebrities come to and a lot of local people come to. So it's a good gathering of all kinds of different people."

It wouldn't be Derby Day without talk about all the fashions.

One woman describes her Derby outfit, "Something that stands out and something that kind of suits me. I always like dressing a little bit different."

And it certainly wouldn't be a good time without a good drink.

Per usual, celebrities lined the red carpet while derby go-ers waited to catch a glimpse of their favorites.

"I'm so excited to be back I love it," says Kym Johnson, who was a dancer on Dancing With The Stars. "I love horse racing. I'm from Australia and horse racing is huge there. So I love to go to the races, but you know, this is the race of all races."

"It's all the great people here, all the great hats, all the great fashions," says Marlon Jackson.

Jackie Jackson chimed in, "The pageantry is just beautiful."

Whether you were on millionaire row, or the infield, everyone was ready to enjoy the sunshine and place their bets.

The big race started around 6:20 p.m with California Chrome winning first place.
