BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (AP) - Bluefield officials are considering banning pit bulls in the city.
Mayor Linda Whalen tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph (http://bit.ly/Wn0LSI ) that too many owners aren't complying with an ordinance that regulates ownership of the dogs.
The ordinance requires pit bulls and wolf hybrids to be kept indoors or in a secure enclosed pen or kennel. The animals must be muzzled and kept on a secure leash when they are taken out of their homes. Owners also must register the animals with the Bluefield Police Department.
City attorney Brian Cochran says the proposed ordinance would give pit bull owners 10 days to comply with the existing ordinance. Those who comply could keep their dogs. At the end of the 10-day period, no more dogs would be allowed in the city.
