SOUTHGATE, Ky. (WKYT) - It's a mystery dating back over three decades. A nightclub fire killed hundreds of people in northern Kentucky.

But Thursday night a new documentary debuting on the Travel Channel asks the question: was the fire really an accident?

It's been a mystery for years. But in Thursday night's seven-minute segment on the Travel Channel, one investigative author and a few former Supper Club workers propose their theory.

Robert Webster, who is the author of "The Beverly Hills Supper Club Fire: The Untold Story Behind Kentucky's Worst Tragedy," is the brains behind the conspiracy.

This show tonight, "Mysteries at the Museum," will highlight his theory centered around arson causing the 1977 Beverly Hills Supper Club to go up in flames, killing 165 people.

But he didn't develop the theory alone. He says coworkers stepped forward and admitted seeing unscheduled maintenance work that was suspicious the night of the fire.

"It's something very suspicious that night. It was really irking him. There may be something more to this story than the newspapers had already reported," said Robert Webster, an investigative author.

Webster confronted state officials in 2009 with his evidence, but after a panel of experts looked it over, authorities decided not to reopen the investigation.

That segment Thursday night at nine p.m. on the Travel Channel.

It will dig deeper into this mysterious fire still coined as the greatest disaster in Kentucky state history. It's also the third deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history.
