Tree farmers gear up for a busy weekend

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Many of you are planning to round up the family and head out to a Christmas tree farm to get a live tree. WKYT visited Nieman's Tree Farm in Lexington and found out there's some things you should know before you make the trip. Know exactly how tall your ceilings are and what size tree you want.

"That's why we have the measuring stick. Standard ceilings are 8 feet. And so our real popular size of tree is between 7-8 feet and that fits in a house pretty good," says Tom Nieman, Owner of Nieman's Tree Farm.

You don't have to worry if this farm will have the size tree you like. "We have 48 acres and 20,000 trees," says Nieman.

The most popular tree...the Frasier Fur. Nieman adds, "The quality of a Frasier Fur is one, the trunk is dead straight, so it'll stand straight. They're symmetrical trees. They're fragrant. Next to a White Fur one of the most fragrant you'll find."

If you've never picked out your own tree you should check it out. It's a great experience.

"It's incredible! For every 3rd tree we take, we have to take people's picture. They get the dogs in the pic and the kiddos," says Nieman.

When all the photos have been snapped, the tree picked out and put up at home, remember your tree is going to be very thirsty, drinking up to a gallon a water a day. If you allow your tree to dry out, a layer of sap will seal the bottom of the tree and keep it from being able to take in water.
