Trio charged in central Ky. Walmart thefts

CYNTHIANA, Ky. (WKYT) - Three people face felony charges after police say they went on a shopping spree but didn't pay the bill.

They say the three shoplifted hundreds of dollars of items from not one but two Walmarts in central Kentucky.

It was as if the trio went in with a shopping list and then skipped paying, stealing it all.

"It's one pick, but it's a large amount of items," said Sgt. Wilbur Gross, with Cynthiana police. "It was very unusual that nobody saw them leaving with that much stuff."

Of the items picked off Walmart's shelves and racks, there were more than a dozen pairs of men's jeans, socks, shaving razors, hair ties, and even a woman's bra.

"Occasionally you might get somebody who gets close to 100 dollars, but you rarely anymore, unless you're stealing a lawn mower or something like that, you never hardly ever get anybody getting 500 bucks worth of stuff," said Sgt. Gross.

Police tell us Leigh Cunningham, Rhonda Brearton, and Dennis Quesenberry are the alleged thieves.

A shoplifting complaint led police to the vehicle the three were in, parked in a handicapped spot right out front of the Cynthiana Walmart.

"As we walked up to the vehicle, we noticed several bags with a large amount of items in it," said Sgt. Gross.

But the clothing, tools, and whatever else was actually stolen from Georgetown's Walmart.

"We took the items into Walmart here in Cynthiana and they scanned items for us," said Sgt. Cross. "It totaled up to be 700 dollars and two cents."

Cynthiana police charged all three with receiving stolen property, and Georgetown will likely charge them with theft by unlawful taking.

All three are booked in the Bourbon County Regional Detention Center, facing more charges in this case.

And police tell us shoplifting is on the rise in Cynthiana.
