Troopers keeping an eye on holiday travel

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The roads are a little busier Monday night, as people are out celebrating New Year's Eve.

The wintry weather adds to the mix, causing a tricky night for travelers.

Last year, state police say they responded to more than a thousand crashes during the holiday alone.

"There's usually more people out on New Year's Eve, and we'll have extra units out and we'll be doing some extra road checks that maybe typically we wouldn't do," said State Police Trooper Jeff Stith.

The icy conditions are set to hit right about the time people may be heading home from their holiday parties--about 2 a.m.

State Police tell us on nights like this, they focus their attention on Main Streets and places around bars, hoping to stop drunk drivers from getting too far down the road.
