Two suspects are on the run and one man was taken to the hospital after a violent carjacking in Harlan County.
One man ended up in the hospital after being carjacked at knifepoint in the Wallins community. Police said they are still searching for the suspects and the vehicle.
Kentucky State Police officials said two men allegedly assaulted Kelley Smith and stole his car early Tuesday morning in what some describe as a quiet neighborhood.
Police said car jacking does not happen often in Harlan County, but they always advise people to be cautious.
“It is kind of uncommon on U.S.119, however, we encourage the public to never stop for anyone, whether you are hitch hiking or whatever the cause may be,” said Trooper Shane Jacobs.
Smith said he ended up in the hospital after he was beaten and forced to exit his car on Longton Road at knife point by two white men, wearing tee shirts and shorts.
“He said that both white males were in the road way and he stopped for them at which time one of those individuals opened the door and got in,” said Jacobs.
Neighbors said they were surprised to learn that something like that happened in the area.
“I was shocked,” said Mary Whitehead, who lives in Wallins.
“Stuff like that doesn’t happen around here, it’s a peaceful neighborhood.”
Jacobs said they are hoping they can get more information and possible leads from the public because if they do not find the suspects, they could end up hurting someone else.
“We are urging the public to contact us with any information they have,” said Jacobs.
The stolen vehicle is a 2006 Nissan Altima with a “Friends of Coal” license plate number 9635DM.
“I hope people do come forward and tell police something because this scares me,” said Whitehead.
Smith has been released from the hospital, but police tell me he suffered many injuries to his face.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Kentucky State Police post in Harlan at 606-573-3131. WYMT was unable to get in touch with Smith for an interview.
