RICHMOND, Ky - It was a report of several small children playing near the road that led Richmond Police to Sara Leigh Drive on Sunday night. They say when they got there four children, ranging in ages from 21 months to five-years-old, were playing outside of a home with no supervision.
Those officers found the front door locked, but could see 21-year-old Malbelna DeJesus sleeping on the couch. They tried to wake her but she was unresponsive. Officers eventually opened a window and began shaking her. Police say she appeared intoxicated.
They say 29-year-old Rita DeJesus was sleeping on the floor in a bedroom of the home and also appeared to be intoxicated. Three of the children belonged to Malbena DeJesus, the other to Rita DeJesus.
A neighbor who didn't want to be identified told WKYT those children were often seen outside of the home, unsupervised.
"They would stay out in the road all the time. They'd run around without clothes on, pretty much stuff like that and people couldn't find their parents of course," said the neighbor.
Both women were arrested and have been charged with first degree wanton endangerment. Social services took custody of all of the children.
