Two Robertson County toddlers are in Children's Hospital in Cincinnati after a bout with E. coli.

"They are so young and this infection can be so dangerous," explains grandfather Raymond Bogucki, "they are only one and two, so to see the look on their face when they were laying on the hospital bed was heartbreaking."

The two boys were rushed to the hospital Tuesday night after a pediatrician saw signs of the bacterial infection. "Just by observation the doctor knew something was wrong that went beyond flu or cold," explains Bogucki. "They rushed one in an ambulance and we drove the other one to the hospital. I couldn't believe it when they said E. Coli, that is something you don't expect anyone you know to get. Especially someone from small town Mt. Olivet."

E. coli is a dangerous bacterial infection that can be deadly in small children. Bogucki says doctors kept a close on the children because in some instances small children who contract E. coli infections can develop hemolytic uremic syndrome -- a serious complication that can cause kidney failure, stroke or coma.

Earlier this month an E. coli outbreak sickened three kids in Lincoln County. A source of infection was not identified.

The Robertson County Health Department says they're conducting their own investigation to try and find the source.

One of the children has been released from the ICU. Both are in stable condition however doctors say they will need to keep them there for a while.
