LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The University of Kentucky is opening up new on-campus living quarters for students as a part of the school's master plan to attract and retain students.
"Woodland Glen I" is newest edition to UK's South Neighborhood.
It's close to The Johnson Recreation Center and library is right across the street.
We took a tour Thursday and were impressed at what we saw.
It isn't your grandmother, or even your mothers, typical college dorm room.
These rooms feature Tempur-Pedic mattresses, granite counter tops and plenty of space.
The dormitory is part of a larger college luxury living trend that's been around over the last five years or so.
Penny Cox, UK's Director for Housing Project Implementation, says more and more students these days are demanding the creature comforts of home, especially the ones who are away from it.
"Many students have never shared a room at home,” said Cox.” It's not like your mother or your grandmother or myself, I shared a room. It's trying to provide that same environment from their home."
Cox says there's also a deeper incentive of attracting and retaining students, when offering this type of residence hall.
"It has helped the university from a recruitment standpoint to get the best and brightest from throughout Kentucky as well as the nation," she said.
Woodland Glen I is already at capacity and will not be accepting applications at this time.
It will open to RA’s next week and students the following week.
Classes at UK start on August 27th.
Next week, UK will be allowing folks to tour even more new dorms, Champions Court I.
