UK police search for suspect after rash of burglaries on campus

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Police need your help finding someone they say could be behind a string of burglaries on the University of Kentucky campus.

UK police released a surveillance picture of a person of interest in the case.

Police say last week, four offices were broken into so now they've issued a crime bulletin.

In just two days, four burglaries were reported on UK’s campus and police believe they could be related.

“It doesn’t happen on a regular basis but every now and then you’ll have a rash of burglaries or some type of theft that will occur in a short period of time and normally they’re connected,” said UK Police Chief Joe Monroe.

Police believe the recent rash of burglaries could be connected because of the similarities each instance shares.

For example, each burglary took place in the morning, at open office buildings on campus and in unoccupied rooms.

“We try to stress to our students don’t leave things unattended in the library, we encourage them to keep those items secured even if you are leaving for a short period of time,” Monroe said.

On Wednesday, UK police released a photo of the person of interest in this case.

They say the man isn't a teacher and they don't think he's a student yet he was still caught on surveillance video coming in and out of office buildings.

“Don’t try to confront this person even though he may not be out to do any harm but we encourage people to directly contact us.”

The UK Police Chief says robberies and burglaries tend to increase right before the holidays so, over the next few weeks, he asks students and staff to take extra precautions to prevent their valuables from getting swiped.

UK police say if you see something, make sure you say something and call police.

UK Police say the burglar stole cash, several cell phones and laptops from office buildings around campus.

The first happened on December 5, when a cell phone was stolen from an office in the Kentucky Clinic. A short time later a laptop computer, cash and other items were taken from an office in the College of Medicine building.

Two other burglaries were reported on December 6. A tape recorder and tablet computer were stolen from an office in Charles T. Wethington Building. Police say the burglar then hit an office in the Carol Martin Gatton Business & Economics building stealing a cell phone.

UK police say the suspect in the burglaries is around 5'8" to 6'0" tall and weighs around 160lbs. He was last seen wearing a dark blue knitted hat, blue jeans, a blue shirt and a black jacket.
