Lexington, Ky (WKYT) - After three robberies in just four days near UK's campus, police are encouraging students to be on alert.

UK police tell us they are working with city police to step up patrols in the area.

It is the second crime bulletin issued the first week back in the fall semester, but UK police say it is also an opportunity to alert their students.

"It lets me know what's going on and kinda keeps me a little more safe I think," said Kevin Blethen, a UK senior.

"They're very informative because you know you always wanna be on the look out especially if you are going somewhere by yourself or alone or everybody needs to be aware of what's going on around campus," said Shermaine Johns, a UK freshman.

One robbery Sunday and two just last night near UK's campus but only one suspect was arrested, 18-year-old Ali Abdeljaber.

The UK student robbed in the latest incident told us what happened to him in what he calls a life or death situation.

"I got robbed on Lexington Avenue by gunpoint. He wanted money, but I didn't give him any. I tried to give him my phone, but he didn't want it," said Chris Karounos, the robbery victim who is a UK junior.

Despite how scary it all is, students say they can learn from what is happening around them.

UK police say students should take advantage of a free ride home with SAFECATS or at least use the buddy system.
