UK to help survey horse population in Kentucky

Posted: Wed 7:23 AM, Jan 04, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky is known as the world's horse capital, but exactly how many horses does it have?

The University of Kentucky's College of Agriculture is leading a study that will provide the answer. The Equine Initiative will conduct a statewide survey of all breeds of horses in 2012. The last comprehensive study of this kind was done in 1977.

Jill Stowe, a UK assistant professor in agricultural economics, says making good policy for the horse industry requires good facts. She says the study will offer accurate estimates of the number of horses at the county level and the economic impact of the equine industry.

Stowe says the mail survey will be done near the end of July. A summary report is expected to be ready around the end of December.
