UK tractor team wins big with little machine

Posted: Thu 10:47 AM, Jun 21, 2012

Some University of Kentucky students have used a little tractor to win a big contest.

The students from the College of Agriculture designed a quarter-scale tractor and entered it in international competition in Peoria, Ill. The university says the team nearly swept the judging categories and earned 16 trophies this month.

The school's teams have always placed high in the competition but never captured the top spot.

The team includes undergraduate students in biosystems and agricultural engineering, plant and soil sciences, mechanical engineering, agricultural education, agricultural economics and community and leadership development.

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers sponsors the competition. Students design and build a quarter-scale tractor. The machines run on a 10 percent ethanol fuel blend and are tested in a series of tractor pulls.
