U.S. Airman from Corbin suffers critical injuries in D.C. hotel

CORBIN, Ky. (WKYT) - Dirk Shelton, a U.S. Airman from Corbin, suffered a serious head injury while staying in Washington D.C.

Shelton somehow slipped and hit his head. The accident happened Sunday night. The 29-year-old's family says he was later declared brain dead, and taken off life support Tuesday.

"Dirk was a wonderful kid from Corbin," said Tim Barnes, a family friend.

Barnes says Shelton was the type of kid, a father can be proud of.

He tells WKYT Shelton spent time in Africa, Australia, and the Middle East while in Air Force Special Operations.

Barnes says there will be a sliver of good to come from the accident. Shelton's organs will be donated.

"He's a hero, on top of being a hero," said Barnes.

Shelton's organs will be used to keep eight people alive.
