Indianapolis, IN (AP) - At least two people are dead and several others injured after a deafening explosion and roaring fire leveled two homes and set another two ablaze.
The explosion at 11 p.m. Saturday destroyed two houses that were side by side and spread fire to two other nearby homes in the neighborhood on the south side of Indianapolis, IN. The cause of the explosion is still being investigated as of Sunday.
Authorities say nearly 200 people were forced to evacuate their residential neighborhood. The powerful nighttime blast shattered windows, crumpled walls and inflicted damage on at least 25 homes.
At least 7 people were transported to a local hospital with injuries. The fire department has not released the names of those killed.
A representative from Citizens Energy Indianapolis says it was a large scale incident that got bigger quickly. Surveyors are currently
assessing which homes are inhabitable.
Officials say the cause of the explosion is not yet known and as of Sunday morning everyone had been accounted for. Officials believe some homes may be safe enough to allow residents back in, under escort.
