Vandals smash windows at Whitley County church

CANADATOWN, Ky. (WKYT) - Seven windows and two doors broken out….and dozens of church members are asking why.

“We’ve been cleaning up glass since three this morning. Still finding glass,” said
Pastor Dorman Patrick of Oak Ridge Church of God.

“We don’t know if it was teenagers or what. Our neighborhood has been run over tonight,” he said.

While they cleaned up their church…some of their neighbors had to buy new mailboxes.

“Anywhere from ten or more mailboxes destroyed. And they stopped off and thought we needed some help with our windows,” he said.

At this time police have a limited description of those they are looking for, believing the subjects were riding a dark colored 4 wheeler.

“To us this is a sacred place. God’s house. When I grew up, I was told to not dishonor God’s house. Taught to respect it,” he said.

But Patrick says in recent times there’s been a switch in values, and he says he’s seen that play out all over their community.

“Our community… the morals have gone downhill, there’s a great drug problem,” said Patrick.

But with that dilemma he says his church has an opportunity.

“But the Lord will help us…bless us,” he said.

And hoping those who did this are caught…taught a lesson…and their lives turned around.
