Vehicle thefts leave one injured in Lexington

Police were investigating at least two vehicle thefts in Lexington on Sunday. They say one of the owners tried to stop the thieves, but was clipped by the car, slightly injuring him.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - As the saying goes, there are a couple of big days in a truck owner's life - the day you buy it and the day you sell it, or in Chase Mudd's case, you pay it off. Chase Mudd paid off his Ford Explorer just last week.

"I finally made my last payment so that was a good feeling," Mudd said.

That good feeling is gone, replaced by frustration after the truck was stolen from right in front of his home. His girlfriend, Jessica Johnson was using it for the day, and as it was warming up on the curb outside, someone snatched it.

"I just started walking toward where the truck was parked right over there and I got to the spot and had a lot of things on my mind and I went 'Wait wasn't the truck here?'," Johnson said.

It wasn't just the truck. Jessica runs a small business and had her purse inside.

"They spent about $2,000 before I could cancel all of my cards. I was going to work to teach a fitness class so I had a lot of important stuff in my bag in my purse taking it with me," Johnson said.

Jessica and her boyfriend weren't the only people in Lexington to have an incident like this Sunday. On Knoxville Court, police said someone stole another car as it was warming up. Police said the vehicle's owner tried to stop the thief, but ended up getting clipped by the car as it got away. He had some scrapes and bruises. Police recovered that car later. Jessica and Chase hope the truck turns up just as fast. Jessica says this should be a lesson to others.

"The police said while your car is warming up lock it and take your spare key back into the house with you, that way it's locked when it's running instead of unlocked and don't put your purse in there while it's running either," Johnson said.
