Lexington, Ky. (WKYT) - Monday marks six years since the crash of Comair Flight 5191.

49 people died when the flight crashed shortly after takeoff from Blue Grass Airport in Lexington.

Several remembrances are taking place in honor of the victims. Golfers at the University Club are raising money for Habitat For Humanity in honor of Pat Smith. Smith was on his way to build homes in Mississippi when he died. The fundraiser in his honor is held every year. This is the first year it's been held on the anniversary of the crash. It raises about $30,000 each year.

Others are visiting the sculpture inside the UK arboretum to honor loved ones. The sculpture consists of 49 birds, one for each crash victim.

Lois Turner Dees visited the sculpture over the weekend. She lost her husband Larry in the crash. In the years since, her family's been able to move forward.

"My two daughters have gotten married in the ensuing six years, and one of them had a baby. So I have a granddaughter. And then my son has just begun his last year of law school at UK so I would hope that Larry would be proud of us for the way that we have continued on."

The anniversary comes as Comair enters its last month of operation. The 35-year-old regional carrier, which is based in northern Kentucky, will shut down by the end of September.
