Vigil held for three victims of Hazard shooting

HAZARD, Ky. (WKYT) - Dozens of people gathered on a college campus Tuesday night to remember three people killed in a shooting.

A candlelight vigil was held at Hazard Community and Technical College for 53-year-old Jackie Cornett, 20-year-old Caitlin Cornett, and 12-year-old Taylor Cornett.

All three were shot at a parking lot on the campus last Tuesday.

"It's still pretty unreal," Cornett family member Patti Lasslo said of the shooting. "It's just these things don't happen to you, and it's a senseless act."

Family members joined the campus community in honoring the victims.

"We are very close here at HCTC, so we thought it was a very good idea to pay our respects to the family, and a candlelight vigil is one thing that caught all of our attention," HCTC student ambassador Jennifer Couch said.

People at the vigil sang songs and comforted each other during a time filled with unanswered questions.

"Caitlin was a sweet young lady, and as a little girl, she would come to my house and go trick-or-treating and things like that," Lasslo said. "She always said, 'I want to be a mommy when I grow up.'"

Jackie Cornett, Caitlin Cornett, and Taylor Cornett were all laid to rest Monday.

Police have charged 21-year-old Dalton Stidham with three counts of murder. A judge sent his case on to the grand jury Tuesday.

While a motive for the shooting is still unclear, police say Stidham and Caitlin Cornett had a child in common, and were at the parking lot for a custody exchange.
