LOYALL, Ky. (AP) - A fire official says departments all over Harlan County are "hurting" for enough volunteers.
Loyall Fire Chief Vern Guffy made the comments last week at a City Council meeting, noting that many blazes occur in the fall and winter months. The Harlan Daily Enterprise (http://bit.ly/Rp5HBp ) reports that he told the panel departments all over the county "desperately need firefighter volunteers."
He says if volunteers have to travel a long distance to get to a blaze, there's not much hope of saving the structure that caught fire. He says the most they can do is try to save other nearby buildings.
