WKYT Investigates: Drug DMT gaining popularity

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Is a rare drug gaining popularity in the Bluegrass? We first told you about DMT back in July, after Lexington police raided a home where they say men were making it. In a WKYT Investigation, we're learning more about the hallucinogenic drug and it's disturbing similarities to LSD.

Dimethyltryptamine or DMT is a hallucinogenic drug, and made naturally by the body.

"The human brain produces it in small amounts, and it's pretty much in every mammal in very minute traces," explained Justin McCue with the Morehead Inspiration Center, "it actually disconnects you from reality, so you have no idea what's going on around you. Time is meaningless."

The drug is very new to Lexington Police. In July, they made their first DMT bust inside a home on Tulane Drive.

McCue only knows of one person who's come into the long-term treatment facility that has used the drug in the past.

"I would consider it extremely dangerous," said McCue, "they have increased heart rate, high blood pressure."
