HARRODSBURG, Ky. (WKYT) - An elderly man is in custody after police say he held a nurse at knifepoint.

The incident happened at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital in Harrodsburg Thursday morning. Police tell us the 92-year-old is a WWII veteran.

"He does have a little dementia and he had thought that he was being held captive," explained Harrodsburg Police Officer Ryan Hislope.

The CEO of James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital wouldn't go on camera, but did tell us she put the hospital on lock down, alerted police, and had an officer in the building within 60 seconds.

"He was able to get between the perpetrator and the victim. And then other units assisted. We was able to secure him as well as the knife as well. And the victim was able to leave."

The veteran, Dewitt Sims, is currently at the Boyle County Jail. He's charged with wanton endangerment.

"Nobody really wins in this situation. Especially his situation where he thought he was possibly a victim as well too."

Police tell us the nurse held hostage was not harmed.
