Waterfront Park may eventually expand to the west

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Waterfront Park in Louisville may start expanding to the west.

The Courier-Journal (http://cjky.it/14aXQh4 ) reports the city budget approved recently by the Metro Council includes $40,000 to begin developing a "Waterfront Park West strategy."

That strategy envisions a new park on 20 acres of vacant, city-owned land just west of 10th Street. The long-range plan is to tie together park land from downtown through the Portland, Shawnee and Chickasaw neighborhoods.

Westward expansion of Waterfront Park has been mentioned off and on for decades.

David Karem, executive director of the Waterfront Development Corp., says officials decided that now is the time to figure out what's feasible.

Karem says a Waterfront Park West could have facilities similar to the upriver park, such as a playground, an amphitheater and perhaps a lawn for festivals.
