West Liberty Elementary holds ceremony to mark tornado anniversary
WEST LIBERTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The tornado that hit Morgan County on March 2, 2012 ripped West Liberty Elementary School to pieces.
Volunteers converted an old warehouse into a new school in just 17 days. The students are still using that building as they wait for their new school to be built.
On Friday, students and teacher held a special event to mark the one year anniversary of the tornado. The theme of the event was "Lean On Me."
"That's truly how we feel," says Principal Vickie Oldfield. "We do lean on each other. To see those interlocked arms and do it, that kind of shows you what this school is all about."
Students posted pictures of what they remember on a special wall, shared a moment of silence and sang together.
Outside, they released balloons with note cards attached, hoping to share their experience with whoever finds them.
Oldfield says after they move into their new, permanent school, the warehouse will remain a special place.
"This will always be a school to us, no matter what they turn it into," Oldfield says.
The new, permanent West Liberty Elementary School will be finished in December.
