Woman headed to work killed in crash

Updated: Tue 11:55 PM, Jun 19, 2012

She was on her way to work about 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, when something caused Virgina Lewis to lose control of her van, just moments after stopping at the Bee Creek Market.

“She got some snacks and things before work and left the store, roughly a couple hundred of yards, lost control of the vehicle,” said Whitley County Coroner Andy Croley.

Lewis was headed toward Corbin on Ky. 1193 when the van ran off the road and it ended up in a field alongside the road.

“The car hit an embankment, flipped at least once, she died as a result of the injuries in the accident,” said Croley.

Coroner Andy Croley didn’t have far to go to notify family members of the crash as Lewis lived a short distance away. What made the notification tougher was that he knew her family well.

“It’s hard on everybody. It’s a way you can help….help in their worst time and minister through this,” said Croley.

Kentucky State Police worked the accident scene and at this point they are working to determine what caused Lewis to lose control of the van..and whether a medical issue was possibly involved. Police do not suspect drugs or alcohol use had any factor.
