Wild chase lands one man in jail

Updated: Thu 8:45 PM, Sep 06, 2012

The first of three crashes happened Thursday morning near New Circle and Nicholasville Road. Police say Javier Rodriguez bumped onto a car that was slowing down in traffic.

"The driver of the vehicle got out, talked to the victim in the front vehicle. That driver indicated she wanted to call the police. At that point he panicked, got into his vehicle, sped away at which time he struck a second vehicle," explains Lexington Police Sergeant Billy Richmond.

Sergeant Richmond says Rodriguez continued running.

"After that he again increased his speed. Got to this point, lost control for unknown reasons, drifted off the side, hit the guard rail and ultimately flipped over the guard rail. The vehicle landed on its side."

Officers eventually caught Rodriguez near his home on Yellowstone Parkway. He told his family he had been drinking and taking medication.

"All I got was that he took a pill that he wasn't supposed to take," says Rodriguez's sister, Iris Chavez.

Traffic did slow down along New Circle for several hours Thursday.
