Winchester police release name of woman injured in officer-involved shooting

WINCHESTER, Ky. (WKYT) - What led to a police-involved shooting that injured a woman at a Winchester home?

Winchester police officers say one of their own shot Sherry Martin Thursday night at a condominium on Oxford Drive. They tell us she pointed a gun at them.

"It shocks me. I can't believe it. She was always a sweetheart to me. I never thought that," says neighbor Drew Combs.

Winchester police say the man living inside the condo called them, and told them his mother-in-law, Martin, had a gun and was threatening him. They arrived and found Martin inside one of the bedrooms upstairs. They say they yelled at her to come out, and she opened the door and fired. That's when they say one of their own fired back. First responders took her to UK Hospital.

Police have placed the officers involved in the shooting on leave pending further investigation.

Right now, Martin's condition at UK Hospital is unknown.
