Winchester studies traffic cameras for 4 locations

WINCHESTER, Ky. (AP) - Officials in Winchester are looking into purchasing traffic cameras to install at four intersections around town.

The Winchester Sun reports Police Chief Kevin Palmer said the cameras would be used to aid in investigations but couldn't lead directly to arrests. He says video captured by the cameras would give officers "probable cause" to investigate.

City Commissioner Shannon Cox expressed concern that drivers would get tickets due to the video, but Palmer said that would be against state law. He said Kentucky law requires officers to witness infractions.

If the city moves forward with the idea, Mayor Ed Burtner said it would need a "clear policy" on how the cameras will be used.

Palmer said each camera cost about $1,500.
