Woman accused of stealing tax refund from friend

RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - Callie Howard said she thought she could trust a woman she and her fiancé knew to do their taxes. That friend, she said, turned out to be a thief, stealing thousands from her refund.

Callie says going to a tax preparer was too expensive, so her friend, Kenna Agee, offered to help out.

"We'd let her do them on Turbo Tax for us and we was going to give her a hundred dollars when we got our taxes back," she said.

But, she said, a week and a half later, they still didn't have the amount they were supposed to get back.

"Initially it was $4,226," said Howard.

Howard said she went to visit Agee to see what was going on.

"I went to knock on her door and she wouldn't answer even though she was in there. I knew something was wrong," said Howard.

That's when she called the company issuing the prepaid card with the refund.

"NetSpend told us the card had been activated, been sent out, and there was $3,000 taken off of it just then," said Howard.

In all, police said Agee used more than $3,900 from the card and was caught on surveillance video with it. She's been charged with theft.

"I know I'll never talk to her again. I won't ever have nothing to do with her. I guess it shows to prove that you really can't trust no one," said Howard.

According to court documents, Agee had been found guilty of theft for shoplifting just last month.
