Woman assaulted near UK campus

Updated: Fri 12:58 PM, Sep 07, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Lexington police are searching for a man they say attempted to sexually assault a woman on East Maxwell Street early Friday morning.

Police said a man knocked the female victim to the ground and ripped her clothes. During the attack, the woman pulled out a pocket knife. She was cut in the process. After the attack, she ran to a nearby home and called police.

The woman was taken to UK hospital to be treated for the cut she sustained from the knife.

A man nearby said he heard the woman scream and saw her running away.

"The young lady ran just as fast as she could in front of my house. You could hear her. I don't know if she was barefooted. I asked her, 'Are you ok?' and she just ran off," said Darrel Derosset.

Police used a K-9 unit to search for the suspect near the scene on Friday. They found blood droplets which they believe may have belong to the suspect. They said he may have also been cut by the victim's knife.

Currently, police have a limited description of the suspect. They are searching for a white man who was wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt.

If you have information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect, you are urged to contact Lexington police.
