PULASKI CO. Ky, (WKYT) - LaDonna Hurd and her family were simply skating at Skater 's Paradise in Somerset last Wednesday when she fell and hit her head. She is now fighting for her life at UK hospital.
You normally wouldn't expect a serious injury when you spend an afternoon roller skating with your children.
But LaDonna Hurd , a home health care nurse and firefighter for the Bronston and Burnside volunteer departments, is at the UK neurological ICU unit. Her family is by her side.
"They're having to stay at the hospital, eating out, traveling back and forth, gas is not cheap. (It's) costing them a fortune," says Robert Mounce with the Bronston Fire Department.
Which is why Mounce is planning several fundraisers.
One of the fundraisers for Hurd is a car wash Saturday at O' Reilly' s Auto Parts. There will be another, much larger fundraiser scheduled for May 3 at the Burnside Fire Department. That will include yard sale, plate lunch, motorcycle ride and auction.
It's all for a mom who is said to give so much of herself to helping others.
"Any function we have. She is the first one here and the last one to leave," Mounce says.
Hurd has two teenage children and a foster child. All of the children them going through the certification process together. Many in the Pulaski county community are answering the call to Pray for Ladonna.
"She 's up and down. She' s a fighter. (She's a) strong willed person," Mounce says.
A benefit fund for LaDonna Hurd has been set up at Citizens National Bank in Somerset.
Friends and family are holding other fundraisers to help Ladonna's family. One fundraiser includes t-shirt sales. We've attached a picture of the shirts in this article. The money is to help with hotel rooms, food, gas. Shirts range from $12 to $15. To purchase a shirt, email Heather McClendon at firstname.lastname@example.org
