Woman injured in officer involved shooting in Winchester

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - An officer involved shooting sent a woman to the hospital on Thursday evening. It happened just before 6 p.m. in Winchester. Police tell us the woman fired at them, and that's when officers fired back.

Police were called to condos on Oxford Drive in Winchester for a complaint, and they say it quickly escalated.

"It's a little bit of a shocker because it's so quiet here," said Kevin Jarrett, a neighbor.

It was just before 6 p.m. with many people at home in those condos when Winchester Police say they received a gun-related call for service.

"I didn't even know nothing was going on until I looked out the window and saw a line of cop cars up and down the driveway, so other than that, it's really quiet," said Jarrett. "I asked some of our other neighbors, and they said it sounded like a couple firecrackers had went off."

Officers immediately responded, not knowing what would happen next.

"They entered the residence. And when they entered the residence, they were confronted with a female subject who pointed and fired a handgun at the officers," said Captain Shannon Stone, with Winchester Police.

That's when the incident took a whole new turn and more shots were fired.

"The officers did return fire, and the female has been transported to the UK Medical Center," said Capt. Stone. "I can confirm that none of the officers were injured as a result of the shooting."

Neighbors are left in disbelief that this would happen where they live but say the woman involved was just visiting her daughter and doesn't live here.

"If she's alive, she's very lucky to be alive," said Jarrett.

Winchester Police tell us many details aren't being released since it is an ongoing investigation. We will bring you more information as it becomes available.

Police are not releasing the victim's name, and there is no update on her condition at UK Hospital.
