Woman rescued from flash floods

Updated: Thu 10:42 PM, Jul 19, 2012

One woman is thankful that the weather didn't claim more than roads and buildings when flash flooding hit Knott County Wednesday. She was swept away in the flood waters.

Kim Boggs is now spending time with the seniors she oversees at Hazard-Perry Senior Citizens Center in Knott County. Wednesday, when she tried to get one of the senior's cars during the storms, the overflow from a nearby pond knocked her down and swept her away from the group.

"That's the only thing I could see was this lake that it was like going down Niagara Falls or something. It was like a big flow of water. I thought OK this is not a good situation," explained Boggs, "never thought I'd be thankful for a trash can, but there was a big metal trash can that I just grabbed a hold of and all I could think of was please do not let me drown in front of these seniors. Just don't let me drown in front of them, I don't want that to be their last memory of me. So that made me just fight a little harder and I grabbed a hold of the trash can with both hands."

Before the trash can swept away too, a line of rescuers went into the waters to get her out safely. Five folks in all were holding hands and forming a line to safety. The effort scared even the rescuers. Boggs says she's grateful for the help.
