A major winter storm is on the way to the bluegrass state. Local high water issues are possible early Wednesday and that will be followed up by heavy snow and sleet. Significant accumulations are likely Wednesday night and Thursday.
Today, Lexington's firefighters will honor their fallen brethren with a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument to the fallen in Phoenix Park.
The monument honors first responders in Lexington who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Two of the firefighters both died in the month of February: Lt. Brenda Cowan, in 2004, and Chuck Williams in 1997.
It's been ten years since Lt. Cowan's death. She and the crew with Engine 18 were responding to a domestic violence call on Adams Lane, in southern Fayette County. While Cowan and another firefighter were preparing to treat a woman lying in the front yard of the home, she and the other firefighter were shot in an ambush-style attack.
Cowan died from her wounds shortly after.
Today, as in the years past since her death, firefighters and other first responders will lay a wreath to honor her memory and the memories of the other fallen.
The ceremony starts at 9 a.m.
