LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Lexington police are searching for two gunmen after a former UK football player was shot in the chest, in what police are calling a robbery gone wrong.
It happened just before 10 p.m. on Winchester and Elkhorn Road.
Police say 27-year-old Shomari Moore was driving down Elkhorn Road Monday night when he was flagged down by two men.
They say when he stopped and rolled down the window, one of the men shot him with a small caliber handgun.
Moore was able to drive himself up Winchester Road, where he flagged down an officer for help. Officers say Moore could barely speak or breathe.
"He said they flagged him down, and as soon as he rolled his window down, one of them shot him in the chest. He sped in his vehicle and when he encountered our officer, he flagged him down," said Lexington Police Lt. Eric Lowe.
Moore was taken to UK Hospital for his injuries..
Moore is a former UK football player (2005-2008). He also served as a graduate assistant for the UK men's basketball team through the 2011-2012 season.
Right now, police tell us they are working to get surveillance video from surrounding businesses.
Police tell us that they are continuing to investigate and search for these two suspects.
