An investigation into a fire that severely burned a Lexington firefighter is now complete.

The fire on Parsons Lane in October of last year left Lt. Rich Carlin with severe burns.

The Lexington Fire Department conducted an investigation into the fire, trying to find out what they could have done better.

The investigation concluded that despite several failures and problems associated with the fire, Carlin's own actions led to his injuries that day.

The report also asks for more training for all fire fighters.

Lexington's fire chief says doing the investigation was their choice and something they always do after a significant fire.

Carlin has recovered and is now back at work with the Lexington Fire Department.

Gentlemen, thank you both for your comments. LexFF, I had assumed the night that I was injured that I had been burned by a rapid change in fire conditions from inside of the home. I felt that I had underestimated the fire conditions present inside of the home. I would later learn and it is stated in the report that my injuries were steam burns that occured do to a master stream being flowed into a window next to the area in which I was located. I had as much control of this occuring as I do the sun rising. I do not recall ever stating that I was freelancing. I was assigned to search by the IC and had located the fire during the course of that search. I chose to assist the engine crew with attack after the IC stated over the radio that he was going to pull out the crews if water was not applied to the fire. Hence, the priority became controlling the fire since the crews would have been ordered out if the fire continued unchecked. Thank you to everyone for the support shown to me

FF w/a Backbone,The committee were fellow firefighters that are not afraid to tell the truth and are friends of his.He was freelancing and admitted to doing it.Maybe you should get all the facts.He admitted fault and knew that he had messed up.i personnaly talked to him at the hospital that night and work with Lt.Carlin every shift.He made a mistake,although costly,he is very man enough to admit it.The complete report has been read by the Local and all the Lex FF's.Nothing in the report is biased at all,all the report was taken from interviews with all the Ff's on the scene.Having a backbone doesn't mean to cover up mistakes,having a backbone is admitting those mistakes and learning from them.I know I have made mistakes on fires,as if yiou have ever really been in a fire you have also.This is why we bring the mistakes to light,too keep it from happening again!

I just have to say that I think it is completely obsurd that anyone who has any firefighting knowledge and has seen the raw video footage from the fire, can place the blame on Lt. Carlin. This man has just spent the last several months of his life dealing with the pain of having is skin boiled from his body and now the people who call themselves his brothers have totally lost the backbone that they have and have conformed to the ways of the brass. After hearing the details of the day from multiple people and seeing the raw video footage myself, it is apparent that those who made up the review committee forgot that they were firefighters or never were to begin with, what ever the case may be. I also believe that before this station decides to print and release information of such a nature they should get the real story from all parties and really hear from those who were involved and not just those who think they can set in a meeting room pass complete judgement on what should occur.
