A Lexington man, accused in the shooting death of his girlfriend, had a not guilty plea entered on his behalf on Thursday afternoon.

Police say Edward Stokley gunned down his girlfriend, Lavena Gibson, in front of a home on Bishop Drive in broad daylight on Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators say Gibson arrived at the home in a car full of friends. Witnesses say she and Stokley got into an argument inside the home, causing Gibson to run out.

Those witnesses say Stokley followed her into the front yard with a gun and shot her. Gibson was taken to the hospital where she later died.

Following the shooting, Stokley was also taken to the hospital, complaining of chest pains. He was later taken to jail.

Stokley was arraigned in Fayette district Court at 1:00 Thursday afternoon. He is charged with murder as well as weapons and wanton endangerment charges.

At that arraignment, he was appointed a public defender and was scheduled for a preliminary hearing on May 5th.
