Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Wednesday evening for all. Rounds of storms increase today and carry us through the night. Heavy rains will be likely and that may cause additional flooding problems.
WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Frightening moments for a Whitley county woman, who told police she hid from a burglar while he searched her home.
Police responded to the home just after one a.m. Monday morning, after the victim claims a burglar broke through her back door. The 85-year-old victim tells police she was in her bed at the time, and quickly ran into her bathroom and locked the door.
Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell says nothing was taken during the break-in, but the frantic 911 calls detail the terrifying moments. The victim says she could hear the burglar searching room by room.
Victim: "They're in, they're already in, hurry."
911 Operator: "Do they have any weapons... Do you know if they have any weapons ma'am?"
When deputies arrived to the home, they told the woman to remain in hiding while they searched the area. Police found 25-year-old Danny Vanderpool in a field nearby. Vanderpool confessed to entering the home, but said ti was a misunderstanding.
"He claimed he was just looking fro a friend, claimed he had gone to the wrong house" explains Sheriff Harrell.
The victim tells WKYT she believes there may have been other people at the home with Vanderpool before police arrived.
Vanderpool is charged with second degree burglary, criminal mischief, fleeing and evading and resisting arrest.
