CORBIN, Ky. (WKYT) - He caused a lot of damage but didn't steal very much.
On Tuesday night, Corbin Police arrested 27-year-old Gary Wright of Corbin and charged him with burglary
They say a Wright broke into the Sac and Pac gas station on 18th Street around 3:30 Monday morning.
The convenience store's front door-- shattered, boxes of cigarettes scattered across the floor and broken beer bottles in the parking lot were three things police found at the gas station after they say Wright tried to burglarize it.
“Someone broke through the glass door early in the morning and stole a bunch of cigarettes and alcohol,” said Capt. Coy Wilson with Corbin Police.
The owner of the convenience store says Wright buys alcohol at the gas station almost every night.
“The owner said they recognized the guy who did it and that they think his name is Gary,” Wilson says.
But this time, when the burglar attempted to break-in instead of buy, things didn't go as planned.
“While he was leaving the store, he actually dropped the cigarettes and broke the alcohol on the road. It was about $1300 worth of damage.”
“I’m going to say that the person was probably intoxicated in order to do something like that. It was pretty careless.”
Police believe Wright was alone when he walked to the gas station that night and they say he may live in the 17th to 15th Street area.
Officers received an anonymous tip that a suspect matching the description of the person that burglarized the business was staying with a female on 17th street.
Officers went to the residence of Misty Hubbard and found Gary Wright at the residence.
Wright was taken to the Corbin Police Department and questioned about the burglary where soon after he was formally charged with the crime.
Wright was arrested without incident charged with burglary 3rd and lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.
