WINCHESTER, Ky. (WKYT) -- An investigation is underway into a fire that forced a woman out of her apartment.

The fire broke out just after 8 p.m. Thursday, in an apartment building on East Washington Street in Winchester.

Firefighters say the fire started in the woman's kitchen. When they arrived, they saw heavy smoke coming from the apartment.

A neighbor says he did what he could to help.

"The woman next door come beating on the door, and said there was a fire. So I went over there to investigate it, and it spread to quick. It got one of her dogs out of there for her," said Paul Jarman.

Jarman says the woman's other dogs escaped the fire, but she lost some birds.

Firefighters say everyone who lived in the building made it out safely.

They say they kept the fire from spreading beyond the apartment, where it started.

They're still investigating what caused the fire.
