Garrard Co. shelter requests donations for rescued dogs

LANCASTER, Ky. (AP) - Animal rescue officials in Garrard County are asking for help after rescuing 45 severely neglected dogs from a suspected puppy mill.

Garrard County Animal Shelter Director Earlene Harris told The Advocate-Messenger that the facility needs contributions of dog food and money to help cover veterinary bills that are expected to cost thousands of dollars.

Harris says animal control officers and sheriff's deputies seized the animals Monday after getting a tip from a concerned resident. Harris said 16 of 20 dogs that were taken to a vet on Monday night needed extensive dental work to heal abscesses and loose teeth.

The dogs were small breeds, such as Chihuahuas and Yorkshire terriers, and will be available for adoption after receiving proper veterinary care.
