Lexington Catholic High School breaks Guinness world record

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - An original idea at Lexington Catholic to partner with local schools and come together for an event has now turned into an official Guinness World Record. On Wednesday, December 4, 2013, at 9:30am, Lexington Catholic students, faculty and staff, together with six area schools, gathered in the LCHS Bueter Gym and held the Largest Secret Santa gift exchange for a single location in the world.

The previous Secret Santa record was 1,270 people. On December 4th Lexington Catholic broke that record with a total of 1,463 participants. The LCHS Guinness Record committee worked extremely hard to put this project together, submitting a great deal of information to the London office, including: 3 hours of video footage from 8 different camera angles, 200 photos and 3 certified witness statements. It took almost 4 months to compile the evidence and receive word that the record had officially been broken.

The schools that participated with Lexington Catholic were: Mary Queen, Seton, St. Agatha, St. John, St. Leo and Sts. Peter and Paul. The students and adults exchanged gifts (valued at $3 or less) to their pre-designated gift recipient. Every individual that participated at the December event is now considered a Guinness World Record holder and is entitled to order his/her own personal certificate of recognition.

Special thanks to LCHS teacher Justin Sealand for organizing the event (with the blessing of President Dr. Steve Angelucci and Principal Mrs. Sally Stevens) and to Mr. Sealand’s hard-working team of students: Marty Brown, Mariah Stevens, Hugo Schurr, Paige Ezell, Sarah Box, Marc Nicoletta, Charlotte Boulanger, Strohmann Breeding and Kate Pierce.

Justin Sealand says of the record-breaking news: “It was incredible to see such a large group of students all commit to an idea and work together. The unifying experience of the event is even more special now with the official recognition from Guinness as World Record holders!”
