In 2011, drivers in Lexington saw red and blue lights roughly 8,807 times. We analyzed every ticket to find out where police caught the most drivers.
"We write a lot of citations just in our daily commutes and things that we see," said Sgt. Billy Richmond of the Lexington Police Department.
We begin our countdown at the number ten spot: Paris Pike and Blue Ribbon Lane. It's there that 103 tickets were given out in nine months.
Number nine is just one of a half-dozen spots along New Circle Road, and this one is ironically enough by a branch of the Lexington Police. It's New Circle and Old Frankfort Pike.
Climbing two spots from last year's countdown, Interstate 75 and Old Richmond Road claims this year's eighth place.
On to number seven, where we head to the neighborhood streets near Downtown Lexington: Midland Avenue and Second Street. At this spot, roughly 152 tickets were given out to drivers.
"A lot of the areas that we do heavy enforcement in, are complaint generated," explained Sgt. Richmond.
Back to New Circle Road, where our next five spots account for more than 1,600 tickets. We start with number six, New Circle at Nicholasville Road, where 230 tickets were written in the first nine months of the year.
"Certain areas of Nicholasville road are worse than others, so we try to be seen a little bit more in those areas," explained Officer David Peel, who has been the top ticket writer for several years, including 2011.
Peel adds that this time of year adds to the traffic troubles around Nicholasville Road, with people coming in to shop for the holiday season.
"With the Christmas season coming up, we get a lot of red light running and a lot of speeding in this area," emphasized Officer Peel.
The next stop takes us to New Circle Road at Versailles, where 261 citations were passed out to drivers.
Now on to Alumni Drive, it takes the fourth place on this year's list, but is down from last year's ranking. Still this exit along New Circle road had more than 300 tickets issued so far.
Brian Potters, like many drivers who use New Circle Road, says it's easy to spot the speeders, "I'm on New Circle all the time in this car, and other cars, and some of them [other drivers] are hauling by me at 70 miles-per-hour."
New Circle at Tates Creek takes the third spot on this year's list. Through September 30th, police filed 405 tickets with drivers breaking the traffic laws.
"Nine times out of ten, I'll see a cop there," said Stephen Walker about driving on New Circl Road.
Two exits further north, brings us to last year's top spot but this year it's number two on the list: New Circle at Harrodsburg Road.
"Any place where they do speed enforcement, it's always going to slow them down," figured Potters.
On to our top spot for 2011, where drivers where caught 499 times in 273 days, the number one spot is at Interstate-75 and Man O' War Boulevard.
"Of course they're going to get you at I-75 and Man O' War, I mean [roughly] 500 tickets that's hitting it pretty hard," said Potters while looking at the statistics.
This spot, however, isn't always an issue. Last year it was tied for the tenth spot on the list. Police say the big jump in the rankings is largely because of the popularity of this location.
"It's one of the most heavily traveled roads in Fayette County," said Sgt. Richmond.
Stephen Walker agrees, he lives nearby and said, "Around rush hour, it's pretty bad," adding that he often looks for other routes to avoid that area.
Efforts, by both police and drivers, are having an affect because five of last year's top ten spots failed to make this year's top ten list.
