PIKEVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Pike County school board members are asking the state Department of Education to conduct a financial audit of the district.

The Appalachian News Express reports the request comes after outgoing school board members Earl Thacker and Frank McGuire said they wanted an independent examination of the district's finances while they served in their positions.

The proposal received unanimously approval from the board. Financial audits of other school districts in the state have found spending irregularities.

Pike board members said they didn't expect to find any there, but thought it would be "worthwhile to see where this board is."
