Prosecution rests case in retrial of murder case

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The prosecution has rested its case in the retrial of a Kentucky woman in a Knoxville torture killing case.

Vanessa Coleman of Lebanon, Ky., is charged with helping three men in the 2007 attack that killed 21-year-old Channon Christian, who investigators said was kidnapped, raped, tortured and left to die. Testimony in the case began Tuesday.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports defense attorneys, who have said that Coleman had nothing to do with the slaying, are expected to begin presenting their case on Monday.

Coleman was previously convicted, but attorneys agreed to a new trial after the original judge in the case acknowledged drug use during the initial trial.

Coleman was acquitted during her first trial of charges related to the death of Christian's boyfriend, Christopher Newsom.
