Rains cause flooding, road closures across Montgomery County

MOUNT STERLING, Ky. (WKYT) - Roads in Montgomery County are still recovering from overnight and Monday morning's heavy rain.

Nearly ten roads, including county and city roads, were closed Monday morning and afternoon due to high waters.

Hinkston Creek overflowed, sending a surge of water onto the roads, according to the emergency management director.

Officials say they have spent the entire day dealing with the continuous rainfall. But Mother Nature has spared them, with no property damage to report.

"Around Hinkston Creek in the Mount Sterling area, we've shut down a few roads. But no flooding in homes or businesses," said Director Wes Delk, with Montgomery County Emergency Management.

Barricades were set up on troublesome roads to stop drivers from daring to brave the high waters.

All of the roads have since reopened, but the emergency management director told WKYT's reporter Jerrika Insco that they are continuing to keep a close eye on the weather.

The emergency management director also told us these are some of the highest water he's seen since 2010. That year Montgomery County received a presidential declaration due to the flood damage.
