While a few showers and storms are heading through the region this morning, the main threat for severe storms from mid-afternoon through the mid-evening hours today. A morning cluster of showers and stray storms will continue to push through northeastern Kentucky this morning with brief heavy rain and a few rumbles of thunder expected (especially for Pendleton, Bracken, Mason, and Lewis Counties). As the day progresses, scattered to numerous storms are expected to develop, especially with the increased heating to the day. The Storm Prediction Center has expanded the Slight Risk for severe weather to include the entire WKYT viewing audience. Large hail and damaging winds (gusts in excess of 60mph) are possible, especially if a squall line develops late this afternoon in advance of the approaching cold front. If this occurs, numerous severe thunderstorm warnings could be issued with this squall line passage. If the squall line doesn’t develop, scattered storms could still reach severe status (but the coverage of damage would be more localized). Either way, be wary of the sky during the afternoon and evening hours. It will still be a hot and humid day with highs in the lower 90s (heat indices around 100.). We’ll remain in the upper 80s to lower 90s for highs Wednesday and Thursday (heat indices around 100) with overnight lows in the lower 70s. Each day holds about a 30% chance for scattered showers and storms (mainly during the afternoon and early evening hours). More widespread showers and storms are expected late Thursday night into Friday as another cold front arrives. We’ll have to keep an eye on another round of severe storms ahead of this front passage. A drier and quieter weekend is expected.
